One day after President Donald Trump staked out a hard line on immigration, the Huntington Beach City Council took its own action on undocumented workers.
On Tuesday night the council voted to declare Surf City a “non-sanctuary city” which would cooperate with federal immigration officials.
“I am pleased the city council unanimously supported my initiative,” said Mayor Pat Burns. “This will be another effective tool to combat crime and it will be a sign to would-be criminals, do not come to Huntington Beach.”The intent is to also “encourage” other cities to adopt similar resolutions.
Typically, cooperation with federal immigration officials means police holding suspects believed to be illegal aliens could be transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Also on Tuesday night, the council voted unanimously against repealing the city’s creation of a “community-parent guardian review board for procurement of children’s library materials.”
Termed “censorship” by some critics, opponents of the board conducted a petition drive with 13,257 valid signatures (10 percent of registered voters) which authorized the council to either schedule a special election on the matter or repeal the original ordinance.
