Punter tackled … at meeting

CHRIS KLUGE with the Minnesota Vikings (Wikipedia).

A little of this, a little of that.

Not Quite Dept.: At Tuesday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council – as you may have read in The Tribune – a controversial proposal to place a plaque in the city’s Central Library was approved unanimously.

Unanimously approved by the council, but not by the attending public. About 100 people spoke against it, primarily on the grounds that it prominently included the initials M A G A, well known as President Donald Trump’s favorite slogan.

One of those who spoke against it was Chris Kluge, a former NFL player who used to punt for a living. Only this time, he called for what he called “peaceful resistance,” and started walking toward the council dais.

The police charged toward him and slapped handcuffs on him and took him away.

But some of the reportage cast it in a more scary light. One article read that Kluge gave a speech and was arrested, as if you can get handcuffed and led to jail simply for criticizing the council.

Things are getting weird in Huntington Beach, but not that weird.

Not In My Parking Lot Dept.: There’s been some controversy in West Garden Grove over a proposed townhome development that would take in part of the parking lot at Grace Baptist Church.

Without commenting on the merits of the development, let me say that people might get need to get used to that sort of thing.

Garden Grove has been called the city in Orange County with the most churches per capita. That’s still likely true, but here’s the issue: many churches have big parking lots that are primarily used on Sundays.

As the demographics of the area change, many congregations have seen their parishes shrink. The Garden Grove Friends (Quaker) group has moved to Anaheim (after a side trip to Buena Park), and the Methodist Church on Main Street in Garden Grove is now using its lots – in part – for paid parking for the Garden Amp musical venue and other events such as the Strawberry Festival.

“Infill” developers trying to find locations with “underused” land will be taking aim at other one-day-uses and churches with shrinking congregations will be looking at ways to keep (or get) in the black ink.

It’s a changing world we live in, isn’t it?

  1. Let me try again, since the first comment did not make the grade.

The person’s name is Chris Kluwe, not Kluge. He said he was engaging in “civil disobedience.” I have not seen any article suggesting he was tackled by police for merely voicing his opinion. He knew what he was doing.

The plaque design was altered, but the MAGA message made the cut, albeit in a different format.
