Two issues related to elections caught the attention of the Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night.

In another step in the council’s feud with Sacramento, the council voted 7-0 to take legal action against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed redistricting of California seats in the House of Representatives.

Newsom was acting in response to a move by the State of Texas (requested by President Donald Trump) to redistrict House seats in an effort to increase Republican representation in the lower house, possibly by five seats.

In reply, Newsom urged the state legislature to respond in kind and to hold an a special election to redistrict to increase the Democratic delegation by five or more seats. Illinois (a “blue” state) and Missouri (a “red” state) are considering joining the fray.

A special election is scheduled in California on Nov. 4.

Councilmember Gracey Van Der Mark originally proposed a resolution opposed to the special election.

Also on Tuesday night, the city council on a 7-0 vote agreed to direct the city manager to return with an estimate of the cost of implementing Measure A, a voter-passed initiative requiring voters to present identification when voting in Huntington Beach city elections.

The State of California and Surf City are locked in a legal battle over that requirement.
