The criminal justice system can move slowly, but a man arrested in Garden Grove in July 2023 for attacking a woman in her home with a knife was sentenced last week to five years in prison.

He pleaded guilty to a felony count of burglary with a sentencing enhancement for committing a felony while armed with a weapon.

According to police, on July 12, 2023, Anh Duy Phan – then 27 – was arrested after breaking into a home in the 12500 block of Lorna St. near Lampson Avenue and east of Dale Street.

Officers arriving at the scene of the incident found a woman with multiple knife wounds and trauma to her neck “consistent with strangulation.” She told police that Phan – an acquaintance – had entered her apartment uninvited and after an argument pulled a knife and threatened to stab her.

As she sought to flee, Phan pulled her back in with one arm around her neck and inflicted cuts and puncture wounds on her body and face.

He then left the apartment but was found in Westminster with the knife in his possession.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment, criminal threats and assault with a deadly weapon.

He was given credit for 944 days in jail for the time he spent before his case could be adjudicated.
