Just how good the Los Angeles Angels could – potentially – be was revealed on Sunday as the Halos defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in Toronto.
Jo Adell hit two home runs (his sixth and seventh) and Jose Soriano retired 20 batters in a row. Trailing 1-0 early, the Angels scored four runs in the top of the fifth to build a lead over the 2025 American League champions they wouldn’t lose.
Adell was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and pushed his batting average to .273. Also having a good day at bat was Vaughn Grissom, whose 2-for-4, two RBI day put his average at .279. Oswald Paraza also homered for the Orange County team.
Soriano (6-2) worked 7.2 innings, giving up five hits and one earned run. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
With the win, the Halos are 16-25, tied with fourth in the American League West with the Houston Astros.
Next up for the Angels is a three-game series in Cleveland against the Guardians.
Braves take series from Dodgers
The Atlanta Braves built an early lead and held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 at Chavez Ravine. That allowed the visitors from Georgia to take the series two games to one.
The Blue Crew could only manage two hits, one of them a two-run home run by Max Muncy. Shohei Ohtani continued his hitting slump, going 0-for-4. He’s now batting .241.
Sunday’s defeat has them in a first place tie with the San Diego Padres (both 24-16, .600) for the National League West lead.
The Blue Crew starts a four-game home series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
