Lebanon cease-fire ceases

A CEASE-FIRE in Lebanon is over (ShutterstocK).

In a quick breach of a cease-fire announced in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah militants, at least 18 people were fatally wounded and 33 injured in a series of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon.

According to United Press International, the attack was centered on the Nabatieh district and included some of the heaviest bombardments since the cross-border fighting began on March 2.

The Israeli military said that four of its troops had been killed and five others wounded.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said the attacks “threatened to sabotage current efforts to get a cease-fire in place and end the war.”

The previous outbreak of combat there had begun on the day that the U.S. and Israel began their aerial attacks against sites on Iran. The U.S. alleges that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, which they might deploy against Israel.

There had been a cease-fire ….

Israel had committed to immediate cease-fire in Lebanon. and would cease all “offensive operations,” the Israeli government announced on Friday through its ambassador to the United States.

According to The New York Times, that was connected to maintaining the still-new peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran. Hezbollah is a militant Muslim group allied to Iran.

However, the ambassador said that Israel would reserve the right to act on “violations or threats.”

Israeli forces will remain in the southern part of Lebanon. ‘If Hezbollah honors the agreement and ceases its hostilities, they will be met with quiet,” said Ambassador Yechiel Leiter in a social media post. But,”like any normal country, will never compromise our security.”

Regarding the agreement between the U.S. and Iran, negotiations are set to be held in Switzerland, but have been postponed.
