In movies and on television, we often see firefighters climbing up ladders on buildings to fight fires.
Early Tuesday morning crews from the Orange County Fire Authority ended up climbing down into a storm drain to knock out a blaze in Stanton.
According to the OCFA, reports of smoke rising from beneath the street in the 8000 block of Katella Avenue, near Beach Boulevard led to the dispatching of units at 12:03 a.m.
Arriving units found that the smoke was emerging from a storm drain, presenting what firefighters called as a “challenging confined space.”
Technical rescue and hazardous materials assessed the situation and upon discovering a smoldering fire, decided that a “specialized confined space entry” was needed. Firefighters climbed down into the storm drain, located the fire and extinguished it.
There were no injuries.
