THE VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL at Sid Goldstein Freedom Park in Westminster (Orange County Tribune photo).
Should all veterans of the Vietnam War be honored with one ceremony, or two separate events be held recognizing the contributions of members of the South Vietnamese armed forces and another for American veterans of the conflict?
At tonight’s (Wednesday) meeting of the Westminster City Council, a resolution that would rescind an earlier resolution and lead to separate observances will be considered.
The new resolution has been requested by Vice Mayor Kimberly Ho and Councilmember Carlos Manzo. The original resolution was approved on Feb. 28 and recognized March 29 annually as “Vietnam War Veterans Day.”
However, “after further consideration of concerns expressed during the meeting and feedback from the community,” they are asking that the resolution be rescinded and that the March 29 observance would “specifically honor American Vietnam War veterans” on that day.
A separate date for an event to honor South Vietnamese veteran of the conflict – perhaps April 30 or another date – is suggested. “Black April” events are held annually to memorialize the conquest of the former Republic of Vietnam in April 1975.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 8200 Westminster Blvd.
