It was kind of a recipe for a victory menudo that the Los Angeles Angels have been lacking all season. But on Tuesday night the Halos had all the right ingredients to defeat the San Diego Padres 4-2 in Anaheim.

There was a strong pitching start by Patrick Sandoval, who went six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run. He struck out seven Padres and walked just one.

There was timely hitting, as Zach Neto’s bases-loaded two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning broke open a tie game.

And there was a rare successful performance by closer Carlos Estevez that closed down a late rally by the visitors with a perfect ninth inning and his 10th save.

With the win, the Angels are 23-38 and remain in fifth place in the American League West. As for the Padres, they fell back to 32-32 and remain second in the National League West. Luckily for them, the first place Los Angeles Dodgers lost 1-0 in Pittsburgh.

The Angels will get a chance at a series sweep Wednesday when they host San Diego. Jose Soriano (2-5) will get the start.
