With daytime high temperatures looking like basketball scores, our West Orange County area is clearly in the grip of a late summer heat wave.
The estimated high point Friday was 106 in Garden Grove, 104 in Westminster, 103 in Stanton and 90 in Huntington Beach.
There should, however be some relief over the weekend. Garden Grove’s predicted high (as of Friday afternoon) will slip to 95 on Saturday afternoon, with Westminster down to 92, Stanton to 94 and Huntington Beach will still stay around 90.
For those without air conditioning, there are city-sponsored “cooling centers” open this weekend in :
- Garden Grove (Sports and Recreation Center, 13641 Deodara) 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday;
- Stanton (Library, 7850 Katella Ave.,) Saturday 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
- Westminster (Library, 8180 13th St.) Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As always, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid being outside in the direct sunlight for extended periods of time and pay special attention to the needs of the elderly and pets.

As the heat wave shows signs of easing, it’s a welcome relief for many. However, we must remain vigilant about climate patterns and take proactive steps to protect our environment. Let’s continue advocating for sustainable practices to combat the effects of extreme weather in the future.
