Does Santa drive a Tesla?

SOME HOLIDAY traditions could use a refresh (Shutterstock).

I enjoy many aspects of the Christmas/holiday season. But don’t you think some traditions are getting a little long in the tooth?

How often, really do you see someone roasting chestnuts over an open fire? It may get chilly in Orange County in the morning – 45 degrees or so – but how often does Jack Frost actually nip at your nose?

Yuletide carols may be sung, but not by choirs so much as music blaring from your Sirius radio as you try to navigate the nightmare traffic in the Costco parking lot.

We could update “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by replacing the sled and eight reindeer with the fast-stepping delivery driver racing back and forth from the Amazon, UPS or FedEx van.

Children used to write letters to Santa old-school by laboriously scribbling on an envelope, slapping a stamp on it and inserting therein a list of requests for stuff that may or may not appear, based on Mom and/or Dad’s disposable income.

Nowadays you can made your list known in a wide variety of electronic means. Of course, few modern kids with an older sibling or classmates beyond the age of 6 really believe in Santa, but play along for the benefit of a) sentimental parents and b) fear of getting socks under the Christmas tree.

But this trend of kids growing up fast isn’t new. Which of us baby-boomers don’t remember that holiday classic tune that began, “We three kings of Orient are/tried to smoke a rubber cigar ….”

Now there’s a long-lasting tradition that still brings a smile to my face.

  1. Naaaaahhh. Don’t change a thing. I’m feeling particularly “retro” (nostalgic? sentimental?) this year. Call it second childhood, call it an emotional response to a world in turmoil, call it idiocy if you like — but I feel all warm and fuzzy when I carry out the traditions of yore (where “yore” = the 1960s and 1970s). Tesla or sleigh, letter to Santa or Amazon wish list, though, I wish you and your family the merriest. Or the hippest. Or the slickest. Or the most cutting-edge, tech-savvy Christmas ever. Whatever you want. Just enjoy!

  2. I read a poem at an event last week. In California, Santa doesn’t ride around in a sleigh. He’s got a red Prius.
