Tear gas and rubber bullets were fired at protesters in Los Angeles on Sunday on the third day of demonstrations against the immigration crackdown and, in turn, the deployment of California National Guard troops.
According to the Associated Press, about 300 federalized Guardsmen were on the scene over the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Protestors shouted “shame” and “go home” at the confrontation at the downtown Metropolitan Detention Center where suspected illegal migrants were detained.
When protesters got close to Guard soldiers after being warned back, tear gas, smoke and rubber bullets were fired at them.
While National Guard troops are normally under the command of the state governor, the president may call them into federal duty.
Dodger bats wake up
The recently low-scoring Los Angeles Dodgers gave way on Sunday to the high-scoring Blue Crew which defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 at Busch Stadium.
Tommy Edman played a key role, batting 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Mookie Betts homered and Clayton Kershsaw (1-0) pitched five strong innings, allowing six hits but only one earned run. He struck out seven batters and walked none
With the victory, the Dodgers are 39-27 and remain atop the National League West, leading the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants by one game.
Angels’ bats silent in 3-2 loss
You can’t expect to win a game when you only get two hits, and that’s what happened to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday in Anaheim.
They lost 3-2 to the Seattle Mariners. They led briefly in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer hit by Taylor Ward (his 18th), bringing home Mike Trout (who got the other hit).
But the M’s recovered with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Seattle’s George Kirby (1-3) dominated the Angels over seven innings, yielding just the two hits and runs, while striking out 14 batters.
Angel starter Ty Anderson (2-3) wasn’t bad, lasting 4.2 innings and giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out six batters.
The loss dropped the Halos (30-34) into fourth place in the American League West by a single percentage point to the Texas Rangers (.470 to .469).
