Claiming that the city is unsafe and besieged by violent crime, President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he was federalizing the Washington, D.C. police force and calling up 600 National Guard soldiers to patrol the city.

According to the Associated Press, the president – under the Home Rule Act of 1973 – is authorized to take emergency action in the federal city.

“This is liberation day in D.C. and we’re going to take our Capitol back,” said Trump.

However, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “unprecedented” and noted that violent crime in the city was down to a 30-year low.

The takeover of the police is limited to 48 hours, with a possible extension to 30 days.
