A discussion of Proposition 50 – a proposal before voters to redraw congressional districts in California for the 2026 mid-term elections – goes before the Stanton City Council at its next meeting on Tuesday.
Mayor David Shawver has asked that the item go before the council.
The proposition was put forward by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to action by the Texas state legislature to redistrict in an effort to create – at the request of President Donald Trump – as many as five more “winnable” seats in the U.S. House of Representatives for Republican candidates.
The GOP has a small margin in the House now, and the party in control of the White House historically loses seats in the midterm elections.
In response to the action by Texas, California voters will be asked to respond in kind, creating “winnable” districts for Democrats to offset any gains by Republicans.
A similar response has been suggested for Illinois and New York (with Democratic majorities) and Utah and Missouri (Republican).
Locally, Huntington Beach and Westminster city councils have approved resolutions urging voters to oppose Proposition 50 on Nov. 4.
