Mariners tangle with Wildcats

The Pacifica High baseball team starts a two-game series with the Brea Olinda Wildcats on Wednesday, contests which may decide which team will take third place in the Freeway League and a CIF-SS playoff spot.

At present, the Wildcats have a 4-4 league record (9-12 overall). The Mariners have a 3-3 league mark (12-9 overall) and are essentially tied for third. Wednesday’s game will be in Brea, with Friday’s meeting at PHS.

Both teams will want to sweep the series to put them in a strong position for post-season play. But even with that, the M’s will have a rugged finish, with two more games with first place El Modena (5-1, 17-5).

Huntington Beach is atop the Sunset League was a 13-0 conference mark (17-4-1 overall). The Oilers should be able to pad their resume with two more games against last place Los Alamitos.

However, the big games are on April 28, 29 and May 1 against Newport Harbor. The Sailors are 11-2 (17-6 overall), and will need a sweep to catch the Oilers. One loss and the Oilers take the crown.

Baseball
Last week, Huntington Beach slammed Fountain Valley 11-1 in Sunset League play. Marina bested Edison 6-4 in Sunset action.
In the Empire League, Ocean View lost 6-3 to Costa Mesa in eight innings.

Pacifica was edged 1-0 by Canyon in a Freeway League game. In the Grove League, Orange rolled past Bolsa Grande 16-2.

Magnolia bested Santa Ana Valley 6-1 and Santiago prevailed in in a high scoring-contest 19-12 over Western in the Orange League.
Orange Coast League action saw Santa Ana over Westminster 9-4 and Garden Grove 7-3 over Valencia.

Softball
Anaheim rolled past Los Amigos 11-2 and Loara past Santiago 7-5 in the Coast League while Ocean View slipped past Calvary Chapel 10-9.

Grove League play saw two games shortened to five innings: Magnolia 31-13 over La Quinta and Bolsa Grande 26-5 over Saddleback.
