The idea of holding a study session on a review of city ordinances on homesteading within city limits advanced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Stanton City Council.
Councilmember Donald Torres made the request. “Homesteading” refers to California state law that allows a homeowner to declare a portion of his or her property as “homestead” and thereby – mostly – beyond the reach of creditors.
The vote was 5-0 in favor, and staff was directed to proceed with research and bring the item back for council review at a future meeting.
The purpose of homesteading is to protect homeowners from being left homeless in times of economic strife.
Regarding the city’s local preference policies in relationship to ensuring “continued support of local Stanton businesses,” the council reached consensus on a 3 percent increase and will review the specifics at a future meeting.
