Sometimes the best news to come out of law enforcement is that no laws are being broken.
An operation was recently conducted by the Westminster Police Department – along with the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control – to check on whether clerks at local liquor stores were selling alcohol to minors.
“Providing alcohol to our youth is a crime and puts young people and the public in harm’s way,” said Deputy WPD Chief Cameron Knauerhaze.
“Minor decoys” – under the direct supervision of department agents – visited 10 retail stores in Westminster with licenses to sell liquor. None of them would.
Had the clerks sold alcohol to a minor there’d be a minimum fine of $250 and 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first violation, as well as other possible penalties, including a possible suspension or even permanent revocation of the license.
