La Quinta High School and Westminster High School are in different school districts, but they’re located in the same city, so clashes between the Aztecs and Lions on athletic fields and courts often have a little extra excitement.
For example, on Monday a softball game was filled with lots of scoring and a stirring comeback win for La Quinta.
The Aztecs jumped out to a big lead with seven runs in the first inning, but the Lions rallied and tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the seventh.
Bella Ballesteros tripled for La Quinta with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Juliany Castanon drove in the winning run with a base hit through the drawn-in infield. She was also the winning pitcher in the 9-8 victory for LQ in this “Battle of Westminster.”
(P.S. Rallie Faatuga had three hits for the Aztecs).
Truth and Consequences
The fallout from sanctions against the Segerstrom High baseball program continued this week. The CIF-SS punished the Jaguars for violations including “undue influence” by requiring the forfeiting of all wins this season and being banned from the playoffs this year.
The Jags had been in first place in the Golden West League. Additionally, the school district removed the principal and baseball coach from their posts.
In their first game after the sanctions were announced, the team traveled to Garden Grove High on Monday, where the Argonauts were on a nine-game home winning streak.
The home team led 4-0 going into the seventh inning, when the visitors rallied for six runs and a 6-4 win, their “first” official win of the season.
