Car jumps sidewalk, kills pedestrian

A 55-YEAR-OLD man was fatally injured early Thursday morning when he was struck by a speeding car as he stood on a sidewalk on Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach.

UPDATE: The man killed in the accident in Huntington Beach Thursday has been identified by the Orange County coroner as Paul Stovall. No city of residence has been released.

A 55-year-old man died Thursday morning after he was struck by a car while on a sidewalk in Huntington Beach, according to police.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Beach Boulevard north of Edinger Avenue. The victim – whose identity was not released pending notification of next-of-kin –was treated by paramedics and then transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Sgt. Julio Mendez of the HBPD.

Police believe that the vehicle, a 2000 BMW X5 – driven by a 34-year-old woman – was traveling north on Beach when it struck a light pole, an electrical box, a traffic signal light and the man on the east sidewalk of Beach Boulevard.

The driver remained at the scene and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
