If you’re going to lose the opening game of a homestand, at least do it when the teams pursuing you suffer losses, too.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers (58-40) rallied but not far enough and lost 6-5 to the Cincinnati Reds. But since the San Francisco Giants (56-48) and Arizona Diamondbacks (55-49) also went down to defeat, the National League West Division race didn’t tighten.

The Dodgers trailed by as much as 6-2, but rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it close.

Four Dodgers had two hits, including Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez, Amed Rosario and David Peralta.

Mookie Betts had one hit but also reached twice on walks.

Bo Miller (6-2) took the loss, working five innings and giving up six hits and three earned runs, two on a first inning home run by Jake Fraley. He struck out six batters and walked none.

The Blue Crew will host the Reds again on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. and again on Sunday with a 1:10 p.m. start. Emmet Sheehan (3-1) will start for the Dodgers on Saturday.

The Dodgers made news off the field on Friday by acquiring starter Lance Lynn and reliever Joe Kelly rom the Chicago White Sox. In exchange, the Sox got outfielder Trayce Thompson and two prospects.

Shohei stays hot but the Angels don’t

Shohei Ohtani remained hot, but the Los Angeles Angels cooled off a bit in Toronto Friday night.

The two-way star hit his MLB-leading 39th home run of the year in the first inning, but that was all the Halos could score against the Blue Jays and lost 4-1

Now 54-50, the Angels remain in third place in the American League West.

The Orange County team outhit the home squad nine to eight but batted zero-for seven with runners in scoring position and committed two fielding errors.

Lucas Gioltio (6-7), making his first start since coming over from the Chicago White Sox, took the loss, lasting 5.1 innings and getting touched for six hits – including two home runs – and three earned runs. He struck out five and walked two.

The Angels will try again on Saturday sending Reid Detmers (2-7) to the mound.
