The spirit of the Rally Monkey was alive and jumping in Anaheim on Sunday as the Los Angeles Angels rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the San Francisco Giants 5-4.
Jo Adell’s bases-loaded double drove in three runs for the stunning “come-from-behind” victory.
With the win , the Halos are 11-10 and remain in third place in the American League West race, 1.5 games behind the Texas Rangers.
“Oh, man, that was big,” said Adell. “I needed that. We needed it as a group.”
“It just shows you, we’re not quitters,” Manager Ron Washington said,.
Until the ninth, the only Angel run was a home run by Zach Neto, his first of the season. Trailing 4-1 going into the final three outs, the team displayed some of that magic not often seen at the Big A in recent years.
With two out and two on, Logan O’Hoppe singled to load the bases. Neto was hit by a pitch to bring home Mike Trout and close the score to 4-2. Then Adell ripped a line drive just fair down the left field line, bringing Jorge Soler, Kevin Newman and – with a desperate head-first slide – Neto for the winner.
The Angels got a good start on the mound from Yusei Kikuchi, who worked 5.1 innings, giving up just five hits and one run. He struck out six batters and walked four.
NEXT UP: Monday is a day off for the Halos. On Tuesday, they’ll open a series hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates (8-15). Jose Soriano (2-2) will start for the home team.
