PACIFICA and Huntington Beach played softball on Friday, but the game was suspended due to rain (Flickr).

When Pacifica, with the nation’s top-ranked high school softball team, hosted Huntington Beach High – 27th in the nation – on Friday night at the Mariner diamond, someone had to win.

As it turned out, it was Mother Nature who did. The game was suspended after four innings with Pacifica leading 2-0.

The rain began in the third inning and both head coaches agreed to stop play and resume the non-league game at a later date.

Both of the games’ runs were driven in by Michaela Meza on a  single.

Pacifica remains 10-0 and Huntington 7-1. The M’s have an Empire League game scheduled for Monday, while the Oilers  will take on Fountain Valley on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Huntington’s baseball team had an upsetting Friday as well, suffering a 2-0 loss to Marina.

The Oilers (now 7-2) came into the game ranked 14th in the nation and 12th in the state.

Marina’s Nicholas Murrey was more than a match for the favored Oilers, pitching a one-hit shutout. He struck out six batters and walked three.

The Vikings only had two hits, one of them a triple by Leo Goodwin, who also scored a run. The other was by Ty Arvin, who also scored.

Huntington used five pitchers in the game. Caden Clem worked 2.1 innings, striking out four batters and walking two. He also yielded one run and one hit.

In Garden Grove League baseball, Los Amigos rose to the top of the standings with an 11-0 win over Loara. The Lobos are 3-0 in league and 5-5 overall.

Three teams – Bolsa Grande, La Quinta and Rancho Alamitos – are tied for second at 2-1. The upset of the day was Rancho’s 6-5 come-from-behind win over Bolsa. The Matadors led 4-0 after 3.5 innings, but the Vaqs scored once in the third and five times in the fourth.

In GGL softball, La Quinta opened league play with an 10-0 win over Loara. Neveah Gomez pitched a shutout with 13 strikeouts. She also stole two bases and scored two runs.
