Deeper cuts among federal workers could be on the way as the government shutdown continues, said Vice President JD Vance on Sunday.
The Associated Press is reporting that Vance said that new cuts would be “painful,” although he stated that the military would be paid this week and poor Americans would still receive some food assistance.
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain furloughed and another 4,000 will be discharged soon.
“The longer this goes o, the deeper the cuts aer going to be,” said Vance. He added that “this is not something that we’re looking forward to, but the Democrats have dealt us a pretty difficult set of cards.”
The deadlock between the two parties in Congress centers around tax credits for the poor for Obamacare. Republicans eliminated it from the proposed “continuing resolution” while Democrats insist it be restored.
Cease-fire deal still in incomplete
The recently-announced cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas has left many details unresolved, according to The New York Times.
Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, prime minister of Qatar, wick brokered much of the agreement told The Times that the parties weren’t ready to settle all of the issues.
“If we went for full-package negotiations,” he said, “we wouldn’t have reached these results.”
Still unresolved is what happens to the weapons held by Hamas and how will Gaza be governed: by Israel, by the Palestinian state or by some other means.
